If you have had sex without using contraception, or you think your contraception may have failed, you may be able to use emergency contraception. If you act quickly, this can often prevent pregnancy. Where to get the Morning after Pill Emergency contraception is available free for women aged 13 to 19 from Balance Street Pharmacy without the need for a prescription. The morning after pill can be prescribed by a doctor but can also be sold over the counter by our Balance Street pharmacist.
It is however free for females aged between 13-19 following a consultation with Tim, the Balance Street pharmacist. Confidentiality Every consultation with Tim, the Balance Street pharmacist is private and confidential Please don't hesitate to speak to the pharmacist if you have any questions The Emergency Pill must be taken within 3 days (72 hours) of unprotected sex.
It contains the hormone Levonorgestrel. This works by making the lining of the womb unsuitable for pregnancy to develop and sometimes by delaying the release of an egg from an ovary. This is not the same as an abortion. How to take the pill Take one tablet with a drink of water. The sooner it is taken, the more effective it is.
What happens next? Your next period may arrive earlier, later or on time. It can also be lighter or heavier than normal. If your period is shorter or lighter than usual, request a pregnancy test from your doctor or the family planning clinic. The Emergency Contraceptive Pill is very effective, however if you become pregnant after taking it there is no evidence that it will harm the baby. Contraception Levonelle is an emergency form of contraception which can only cover this one episode of unprotected sex. You should now make an appointment with your GP or family planning clinic to discuss other forms of contraception. What to do if you feel sick If you feel sick, ask the pharmacist to recommend a suitable tablet, though this must be purchased. If you are sick (vomit) within 2 hours of taking the tablet you will need to get another one to replace the lost dose.
Revisit your pharmacist, doctor or family planning clinic for another pack, or consider a Copper IUD as it is the most effective method of emergency contraception and is available from your GP or family planning clinic. Sexually Transmitted Infections If you have taken a risk with pregnancy, could you have also taken a risk with sexually transmitted infection? Remember, Chlamydia is an infection with no symptoms but can be a cause of infertility. It is easily treatable with antibiotics.

It is important that you take the right dose of your prescribed medicines at the right time each day to get the most from your medicines to control your condition(s) as much as possible. This can sometimes be difficult if you take more than one medicine. One way in which this can be made easier is for your medicines to be supplied in a Monitored Dosage System, which provides you with a separate compartment for each dosage time of the day.
A monitored dosage system (MDS) is a medication storage device designed to simplify the administration of solid oral dose medication, especially for those on multiple medications. It aims to address the issues of difficulty accessing medication due to sight impairment or other disability and/or forgetfulness.
MDS devices are usually a variation on the design of a box or a blister pack, divided into days of the week with several compartments per day to allow for the different timing of doses such as breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime.
Our Pharmacist can help identify which patients this type of system would be suitable for.
MDS may be suitable for patients in the following circumstances:
